"My Transformative Journey with
Westminster Working Cultures"

POSTED ON MAY 28,2024

As a student at the University of Westminster, I've always sought opportunities to broaden my horizons and gain a deeper understanding of the global professional landscape. The Westminster Working Cultures (WWC) programs provided me with two such transformative experiences: one in the United Kingdom and another in Mumbai, India. These programs not only enriched my academic and professional journey but also offered invaluable insights and connections that will shape my career for years to come.

Discovering New Horizons in the UK

The WWC UK program was a transformative experience that allowed me to delve into the heart of the British business landscape. From the bustling streets of London to the historical charm of Liverpool, every moment was a learning opportunity. Our visit to prominent companies such as Cognizant, Deloitte, and Softcat plc provided a comprehensive understanding of various industries, from tech and cloud computing to client relationship management and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) outreach.

Mr. Joy Khambhaita’s session was particularly eye-opening, challenging the common misconception that the tech industry is solely about coding. His advice to "make mistakes now, so you won't regret them in the future" resonated deeply, encouraging us to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the learning process. Similarly, insights from industry leaders like Mr. Arindam Gupta, Ms. Sonal Jain, and Mr. Tony Lui on programming and cloud computing underscored the significance of meticulousness and the transformative power of artificial intelligence.

A highlight of the UK program was the emphasis on career growth and organizational culture, shared by esteemed professionals like Ms. Padmasini Dayananda and Ms. Midhusa Mohan. Their journeys, marked by dedication and perseverance, inspired us to align our values with our career goals, emphasizing the importance of hard work and determination.

A Vibrant Cultural and Business Exploration in Mumbai

Transitioning to the WWC Mumbai program, my first visit to India, I was excited to explore one of the world's most dynamic economies. The program provided a unique blend of cultural immersion and professional development, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of India's rich heritage and its thriving business ecosystem.

Our sessions with distinguished speakers such as Mr. Rakesh Nair from the Bombay Stock Exchange and Mr. Jigar Mehta, co-founder of Network Foods, were immensely enlightening. Mr. Nair’s insights into financial literacy and the importance of the stock exchange were invaluable, while Mr. Mehta's entrepreneurial journey with Honey Twigs highlighted the significance of consumer research and marketing strategies.

The program also emphasized the importance of adaptability and continuous learning, as shared by Mr. Rohit Bansal from Reliance Industries and Mr. Karan Desai from Interface Ventures. Their discussions on industry challenges, networking, and effective communication offered practical advice that will undoubtedly shape our professional paths.

Additionally, our visit to RUR Green Life and the session with Ms. Sumedha Bhirde on sustainable waste management solutions were particularly impactful. These experiences underscored the importance of environmental sustainability and the innovative approaches needed to address global challenges.

Gratitude and Acknowledgements

I am deeply grateful to the University of Westminster and the Westminster Working Cultures team for making these incredible opportunities possible. Their unwavering dedication to providing students with life-changing experiences is truly commendable.

A special thank you to the professional volunteers and esteemed speakers who generously shared their time and expertise. Your insights and guidance have left an indelible mark on my aspirations and ambitions.

I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the program leaders and organizers, including Alyssa Martin, Ludovica Siniscalchi Bernabò, Shelby Staub, Margaux Bastien, and Misbah Malik. The Westminster Working Cultures UK and Mumbai programs have been more than just educational journeys; they have been transformative experiences that have broadened my horizons, enriched my understanding of various industries, and strengthened my resolve to pursue my professional goals with confidence and determination. I look forward to applying the lessons learned and the connections made as I continue to navigate my academic and professional journey.

These programs have reaffirmed that success is not always a linear path, and sometimes, the most unconventional routes lead to the most remarkable destinations. I am excited to embrace the future with renewed vigor, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration gained from these extraordinary experiences. Thank you, Westminster Working Cultures, for this life-changing opportunity.

Advice for Future Participants

If you're a University of Westminster undergraduate or postgraduate considering applying for future Westminster Working Cultures programs, or if you're planning to participate in similar programs elsewhere, here are some pieces of advice based on my own experiences:

These programs offer a diverse range of experiences, from corporate visits to cultural immersion activities. Embrace each experience wholeheartedly, and you'll find yourself gaining insights and making connections you never imagined.

2. Network Effectively: Take advantage of every networking opportunity provided during the program. Engage with speakers, fellow participants, and industry professionals. Remember that networking is not just about collecting business cards but building genuine connections. Follow up with people you meet, connect with them on LinkedIn, and nurture those relationships beyond the program.

3. Embrace Diversity: These programs often attract participants from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and academic disciplines. Embrace this diversity and take the opportunity to learn from your peers. Engage in discussions, exchange ideas, and broaden your perspectives. You'll be amazed at how much you can learn from the experiences of others.

4. Be Proactive: Take initiative and actively seek out opportunities to learn and grow. Ask questions during sessions, participate in group activities, and take on leadership roles whenever possible. Don't wait for opportunities to come to you; create them for yourself through your enthusiasm and initiative.

5. Reflect and Apply: Take the time to reflect on your experiences during the program and identify key learnings and takeaways. How can you apply these insights to your academic and professional goals? Set aside time for self-reflection and goal setting, and develop an action plan for implementing what you've learned.

6. Stay Connected: Stay connected with your fellow participants and program organizers even after the program ends. Join alumni networks, attend networking events, and stay engaged with industry updates and opportunities. The connections you make during the program can be invaluable resources throughout your academic and professional journey.

7. Seize Every Opportunity: Finally, seize every opportunity that comes your way during the program. Whether it's a chance to visit a prominent company, attend a workshop, or engage in a cultural activity, make the most of it. You never know where these opportunities may lead or what insights they may provide.

By following these steps, I'm sure all of you will be well-prepared to make the most of your experience in future Westminster Working Cultures programs or similar initiatives. Remember to approach the program with an open mind, a proactive attitude, and a willingness to learn and grow.
